Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park)

Feel like you’re the king of the world as you stroll alongside the massive red rock cliffs of Kings Canyon, copping an eyeful of the lush palm forest down under.

Watarrka National Park, just a three-hour roadie from Uluru, is where you’ll find the grand Kings Canyon – a sight to behold with its 300m high sandstone walls, gorges packed with palms, and views that’ll have you gazing out over the desert for ages.

It’s heaps more than a spot for a quick day trip to this park. Watarrka’s got all sorts – walking tracks, 4×4 routes, camel rides, and a mix of places to stay, from camping spots to fancy resort digs.

Rim Walk

Chuck on your walking shoes and hit the iconic Kings Canyon Rim walk. This 6km loop will lead you into the Garden of Eden, a stunning waterhole surrounded by rare greenery, before lifting you to 360° views that’ll knock your socks off right over the red sand hills.

Made for those who don’t mind a bit of a workout, the first 500 steps up the Rim Walk are a challenge, but stick it out for the top-notch view at the end.

With legendary stops along the way like Priscilla’s Crack (cheers to the Aussie classic flick Priscilla Queen of the Desert for that one), the ancient domes of ‘The Lost City’, and the Garden of Eden, the Rim Walk’s a 3–4 hour adventure best kicked off at dawn before the heat kicks in.
